Summer is almost here, which means the rich and famous will soon be flocking to their luxurious Hamptons retreats.
The Hamptons, also called the East End of Long Island (of New York) are made up of towns, villages and hamlets including Westhampton, Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton and Montauk.
It’s a pricey place to live and celebrities, along with New York’s high society, love it.
These are just a few famous people who call the Hamptons home:
Robert Downey Jr.
Last year, the Iron Man actor purchased the historic Edward DeRose Windmill Cottage in East Hampton. Property records show the last listing price of the cottage was $11.9 million, and that it was purchased last summer for $10.5 million by Monona LLC. (Word has it that Downey is behind the LLC.)
And four miles down the road is another working windmill currently on the market as a rental for $45,000 a month.
The actress and ex-husband, Coldplay front man Chris Martin, bought this Hamptons mansion on the East End as a summer retreat in 2006 for $5.4 million. The couple has since divorced but the home remains a retreat for the Oscar winner, who most recently gave the home a major organizational makeover just in time for summer.
The New York Giants quarterback dropped $8.5 million for a Hamptons home last October. The three-story mansion is in Quogue, a popular retreat for celebrities in the Hamptons. The property is just under 7,000 square-feet, has five bedrooms and four bathrooms and its own private entrance.
If you have a cool $29.5million to drop on a Hamptons mansion, Christie Brinkley is selling her luxurious, 11,000 square-foot home in Bridgehampton North.
Known as Tower Hill, the property was built in 1891 and has been restored by the supermodel over the two decades she has called it home. One of the most amazing features of the estate is a 50-foot observation tower that you can get an incredible view of the coastline from.
A Celebrity Hide-Away
In the Hamptons, residents are used to seeing celebrities. Unlike in Hollywood and New York City, in the Hamptons “there’s not a large presence of paparazzi.” With exorbitantly expensive homes and quiet beaches, it’s no wonder the Hamptons is the perfect getaway for the rich and famous.
Other celebs that call, or have called, the Hamptons home include Paul McCartney, Steven Spielberg, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Billy Joel, The Hiltons, Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos, Matt Lauer, Matthew Broderick & Sarah Jessica Parker, Martha Stewart, Renee Zelweger and Jerry Seinfeld; whose East Hampton waterfront property was voted the top celebrity summer home in the country.
Unfortunately, for most of us the Hamptons are more than we can afford for a primary residence, let alone a summer getaway. Though the average price of homes in the Hamptons has recently dropped, the median price for a Hamptons home is still just below $1 million.
If you’re looking for a vacation home, main residence, or somewhere like the Hamptons to take a weekend getaway – for a more affordable price – try exploring Hamptons alternatives in Great Barrington, New Hope, Yardley, Stockbridge, or Lenox.
