US Baby Name Trends: Unisex Names Hit Record High in 2022

US Baby Name Trends: Unisex Names Hit Record High in 2022
Graphic: Nathaniel Blum

The Social Security Administration recently released its list of the most popular baby names for newborns last year, with Liam, Noah and Oliver the most popular names for boys and Olivia, Emma and Charlotte the top names for girls.

Hidden in the new statistics are these newsworthy names: Logan, Ezra, Avery, Dylan and Carter. They were the most popular unisex names of boys and girls last year, the vanguard in a growing phenomena in US baby names.

Gender neutral names have been slowly gaining ground since the 1960s to an all-time high this year to nearly 15% of given birth names, according to BeenVerified analysis.

We looked at baby name records from the Social Security Administration dating back to 1880 to determine our findings. For the purposes of this study, we defined unisex names as those in which at least 5% of names were given to an opposite gender—or one out of every 20 births.

For example, last year 99.5% of children christened “Michael” were male, so that does not count as a unisex name, whereas 5.3% of children named “Jude” last year were female, qualifying it for unisex status in our study.

Unisex baby names now account for nearly 15% of given names

Unisex baby names are having their moment. Looking at the past 100 years, as the graphic below shows, unisex names hovered around 4% and 5% of newborns each year from 1923 through 1960. In 1966, unisex names crossed 6% of birth names for the first time. For the next three decades, unisex names accounted for between 6% and 8% of birth names each year until 1993, when the rate hit 9%.

Unisex names accounted for one in every 10 children in 1995, and since 2014 that number has climbed from 11.7% to 14.9% in 2022, the fastest increase in recent history.

The rise of Logan

Two science fiction tales may account for the rise of Logan’s popularity. As the graphic below shows, its popularity began to rise in the mid-1970s, popping in 1977 after the 1976 release of “Logan’s Run,” a film that starred Michael York and Farrah Fawcett-Majors—two major stars at the time— followed the next year by a TV series of the same name.

The name got another lift in popular culture with the 2000 release of the first X-Men movie, which starred Hugh Jackman as Logan, aka “Wolverine.” The name saw a recent peak in popularity in 2007, but this past year, it was the 33rd most popular name for newborn boys and the 368th most popular name for girls.

Robin, Charlie were predominately male—until they weren’t

As the graphic below shows, a century ago most Robins were male, but over time, Robin became mostly a female name. In recent decades, the tide began to turn, and the name in 2022 was the most evenly split between genders—of the 637 children named Robin last year, 50.4% were girls and 49.6% boys. If the downward trend on female usage holds, Robin appears likely to reclaim its mostly male status in the near future.

Robin’s changing gender patterns

Of our top 10 most gender neutral names in 2022, Charlie was most popular, with more than 4,400 boys and girls taking the name. Compared to Robin, Charlie’s switch from predominantly male to female took a faster turn. Creeping up in popularity for girls since the 1970s, it crossed over to a predominantly female birth name in 2016. In 2022, 52% of “Charlies” were girls.

Kerry’s up and down climb towards 50-50

As the graph above shows, Kerry’s popularity has ebbed between genders. Although the name has crossed over the 50% line twice in the past century—first in 1967, favoring girls, then in 2003, favoring boys—there was no one year in our analysis in which Kerrys born were a 50-50 split between boys and girls.
