New relationships are generally exciting, but they can also be intimidating. It takes time to really get to know someone and trust them.
Once you do build that trust and begin to see a future together, the last thing you want to find out is that your partner is already married to someone else. Unfortunately, it can and does happen – and if you want to avoid committing to a person who’s still legally connected to someone else, you may want to look for signs that may indicate that you could be “the other woman/man.”
Here are a few potential signs that your partner might be hiding another relationship.
They won’t give you their phone number.
Do you know your new partner’s phone number? Or will they only chat over email or a private messaging app? A partner who hides their real phone number may possibly be worried that their spouse will catch them cheating when a call or text from their lover comes through.Find out who the email address belongs to
They never invite you over.
If you’re always going out or only spending time at your place, your S.O. could be purposely hiding their home life — including a possible spouse (or maybe their parents with whom they reside) — from you.
They never spend the night with you.
Does your date always leave by a certain time? Do they craft excuses like “I have to be up early” or “I need to go home and feed my dog” every time you ask them to stay? Perhaps they aren’t ready for that and simply don’t feel comfortable staying overnight. Or, these excuses may indicate there’s someone at home waiting on them.
You don’t know much about their family or personal life.
It’s common to want to wait until things get a little more serious before introducing a partner to friends or family members. However, if you’ve been seeing each other for a while and haven’t even discussed meeting the people in your partner’s life, there could be a reason they don’t want their inner circle to know about you.
What Should I Do If I Suspect My S.O. Is Hiding Another Relationship?
If your date claims that they’re not married but continues to behave suspiciously, you might want to do a little sleuthing to find out what’s happening. Social media accounts, which often include details about relationships, families, and other personal interests, are a good place to start. Your partner may claim they’re “not on social media” to throw you off, but a good background check tool can uncover profiles that may be associated with their name.
If you can’t find any information on social media, you can search public records to look for any marriage certificates issued to your partner. Alternatively, if they admit to once being married but insist that they are divorced, you can try and confirm that by looking for an order of divorce record.
If you find evidence that your partner is cheating on their spouse with you, it may be time to walk away. It’s not your fault that they lied, but if you continue to stay involved with them knowing that they’re married, the situation will very likely end in heartbreak for everyone involved.Search a full background report on a person
