If you’re like most people, you’ve posted a lot on Facebook over the years. You’ve been tagged by friends or tagged other people in your own posts. There are times when you might want to reference a past post instead of creating another new one, but you’re not sure how to find an old Facebook post. The good news is there are a couple of ways to track down previous posts made by you and your friends.

How to find old posts on Facebook

One easy way to find old posts is to go to your profile page using a web browser on a desktop computer or laptop. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Below your profile picture, locate the two buttons that say ‘Add to story’ and ‘Edit profile’. Just beneath these two buttons, click the Menu button (indicated by the ellipses).

  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, click Activity Log.

  3. At the top of the Activity Log, there is a search box. Below that box, a variety of filtering options are available. Type the name, phrase or other identifier for what you’re looking for into the search box and press Enter.

  4. Two things will happen: First, you’ll see the center pane change results to everything Facebook thinks you want to see for the phrase you entered. Second, the left navigation pane will change to show search results. You’ll see a variety of ways you can filter the results in the center pane.

Because the goal is to limit scrolling, use the filters to narrow down and target your search as much as you can. If you’re looking for a video, for instance, select Videos from the filter menu. Facebook will remove all other types of results to only show you videos with your desired search term.

Within each filter, Facebook will also try to give you even more search options, such as date posted, live events, city, education, etc. Use each option as needed to limit the amount of scrolling and get to the information you need as quickly as possible.

Can you search old Facebook posts by date?

Yes, you can quickly search your Facebook account by date to find old posts. If, for example, you want to find a post from two years ago, go to your profile page and follow these steps:

  1. Below your profile picture, locate the two buttons that say ‘Add to story’ and ‘Edit profile’. Just beneath these two buttons, click the Menu button (indicated by the ellipses).

  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, click Activity Log.

  3. From the Activity Log left-hand navigation pane, click Your Posts.

  4. Click Date.

  5. In the Filter window, under Year, click All.

  6. Select a year.

  7. Click Month.

  8. Select a month from the menu.

  9. Click Save Changes.

  10. Click Continue.

Now, Facebook will adjust your Activity Log to show only information from the year and month you selected. In the Activity Log left navigation pane, select the category you want to search. (You can select a variety of categories, one at a time.)

When you’re done, don’t forget to go back and filter your Activity Log from the old date(s) you just searched. To do that, just click the X next to the Date filter at the top of the log.

Facebook will automatically revert to the All date for your activities.
