Choosing a name for a new baby can be a cherished decision, often reflecting family traditions, personal interests, and connections to places or concepts that hold special meaning. These days, parents are opting for a wide variety of names, sometimes including special times like days, months, seasons, and even zodiac signs.

BeenVerified conducted a study to reveal some fascinating insights into how these special moments have influenced baby naming trends over the past decade. We looked at English as well as Spanish name variations. For example, for Sunday, we used the direct translation of Domingo, as well as the feminized version, Dominga.

So, here are a few fun facts about how babies these days are named based on specific time periods.

Overall findings

  • There is a strong tendency towards female names in days, months, and seasons, while zodiac names are predominantly male.
  • The top names seem to be overwhelmingly more popular than the ones at the bottom of the list, often being used thousands of times more frequently.
  • Some Spanish names like Julio and Domingo are a lot more preferred than English names.
  • Leo is the most popular name on this list, with 65,000+ uses, followed by Maya with 40,000+ uses.
  • Some names like Saturday and many of the zodiac signs are not used at all.

Key findings

  • The name Wednesday is the most popular, exclusively given to female babies.
  • Most English day names are only given to female babies.
  • Sunday, and its Spanish equivalent, Domingo, is the only day name given to male babies.

  • Thursday and Saturday are the only day names not preferred for babies.
  • Monday and Friday, the two days thought to represent the beginning and end of the week, are the least used.

Key findings

  • August and Julio (July) are predominantly male names, contrasting with the general trend toward female names.
  • August is the only name also popular with males, given to nearly 25,000 baby boys, compared with other names which typically fall below 100.
  • The top two spots both go feminized versions of Spanish month names, Maya for May and Julia for July.
  • February and March were the only months with no baby names given in either language.
  • Some month names are much more popular than others, like Maya on the number one spot is used 40,000+ times while those at the bottom of the list are given to just a few hundred babies.
